1 Thessalonians 5:19 Quench not the Spirit. KJV
The word “quench” is used in reference to a fire. Yet in this verse, it is used to refer to the Spirit.
Acts 2:3 And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them KJV
In this verse we see the Holy Spirit manifesting as tongues of fire.
We are called the temple of the Living God, and the Spirit of God dwells in us.
1 Corinthians 3:16 Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you? (KJV)
We are also called a royal priesthood.
1 Peter 2:9 But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, (KJV)
The priests were to keep the lamps burning continually in the Tabernacle.
Exodus 27:20-21 “Command the people of Israel to bring you pure oil of pressed olives for the light, to keep the lamps burning continually. 21 The lampstand will stand in the Tabernacle, (NLT)
Thus, the Lord is telling us that the Holy Spirit in us should be like the fire continually burning in the Tabernacle.
I believe He is expecting us to continually stir up the “fire” of the Holy Spirit in us.
2 Timothy 1:6 Wherefore I put thee in remembrance that thou stir up the gift of God (KJV)
That fire is to burn all the dross of the flesh. But also, it is to radiate from inside of us to all around us just like the shadow of Peter that was healing those it fell upon.
Acts 5:15-16 As a result of the apostles’ work, sick people were brought out into the streets on beds and mats so that Peter’s shadow might fall across some of them as he went by. 16 Crowds came from the villages around Jerusalem, bringing their sick and those possessed by evil spirits, and they were all healed. (NLT)
Hebrews 1:7 And of the angels he saith, Who maketh his angels spirits, and His ministers a flame of fire. (KJV)
We are to minister with the power of the Holy Spirit like “flames of fire” to those around us. We are to set them “ablaze” with passion for the Lord and for His people.
